by | Oct 5, 2020 | Mind

Even though depression is one of the most well-recognized disorders, it is widely stigmatized. In 2016, 16.2 million U.S. adults had at least one major depression episode, estimates the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH). That represents approximately 6.7 percent of the U.S. adult population. Depression is most common between the age of 18 and 25 (10.9 percent) and individuals belonging to two or more races (10.5 percent).

When extreme emotions take hold and you’re unable to shake them off over time, that’s when you know you’re depressed. And depression doesn’t just go away on its own. You have to do something, take action practically for it to go away gradually. The following tips can help you feel better prima facie, but if you’re not able to get over it on your own, don’t hesitate to seek support from your loved and trusted people.

Exercise

Depressed people may not feel like being involved in activities. But plunge yourself into it anyway (ask a friend if you need to be inspired to exercise with you). Dedicating 15 to 30 minutes to being active every day works wonders. Breathing activities also contribute to alleviating our moods. Especially the 4-7-8 method of breathing. Nurture yourself with good nutrition

If depression has affected your appetite, you’ll need to be extra mindful of getting the right balance of nourishment. Proper nutrition can affect the mood and energy of an individual. So, consume plenty of fruits and vegetables. Developing healthy eating habits helps a lot in the longer run. You can learn more about it on at the nutrition blog.

Identify troubles, but don’t dwell on them

Try to identify the situations that could be the reasons for your depression. Talking is a way of releasing emotions and gaining some understanding. Turn your focus to something constructive after you air out these thoughts and feelings. To fix problems, take charge of your life.  If you need it, ask for help, maybe from a friend or a relative. Feeling associated with friends and family will help reduce anxiety.

Express yourself

With depression, an individual’s creativity and sense of humor may seem deemed. Exercise your imagination (painting, drawing, sewing, writing, dancing, composing music, etc.), and you will not only get your creativity flowing, but you also loosen up some positive emotions. Take out time to play with your pet, or engage in something that gives you Joy. Find something to chuckle about, maybe a funny movie. Laughter helps lighten the mood.
