1. I will be happy if I am in a relationship/married to the right person

The myth of happiness is the notion that you can be happy if you find a perfect partner. Research shows that happiness boosted by marriage lasts only an average of two years. Sometimes you cannot find the ideal partner who can fulfill your goal. I make you happy as expected. You often feel that something might be wrong, or you might be the only person who feels like that.  You think you are not happy if your relationship has fallen apart. 

2. Getting a dream job and making money will make me happy

One of the greatest misconceptions is that you are happy now, but you will be happier if you get that dream job. That kind of happiness is brief, seemingly perfect, and makes you happy as expected. You should understand that being happy is not related to being an advancement in a career. It is just an option that a job or career is just a motivating factor for happiness in your life.

Money indeed makes life easier, but after a  point, it stops making it better. Research says that good and high income provides you life satisfaction but not happiness.

3. I will be happy if I am wealthy and successful

Most of you blindly believe that if you are not happy now and you will be happy when you have finally made it by achieving a level of prosperity and success. However, When you finally achieve whatever you want to, your life can become dull and empty. The key to happiness is not in how successful you are but in what to do with your success.  It is how your income is but how you allocate it for the betterment of society.

4. The best and happiest years of life are over

Most of you believe that happiness declines with age.  Whether you are young or old, you think that your finest years are always behind you, but in reality, older people are happier when compared to younger people. They experience more positive emotions than negative ones. These thoughts happen because you recognize that your years are limited and change your perspective about life over the years. You become wiser as you age. 

5. Happiness is my destination

People think that happiness is a destination or acquisition of something which makes them happy.  Yes, these things can contribute to her happiness but not as much as you think.   It will be just a tiny part of your whole happiness picture. If you cannot be happy at present, no matter what happens, you cannot be happy one day later as well. Know that most of your happiness is in your hands.  It is the process but not a destination to reach. 

6. Happiness is the same for everyone.

One of the common myths is that you think that happiness is the same for everybody. Happiness is specific to an individual person. Each one of you might have different life experiences. All of you have different tastes, all of you agree to different things and different degrees.  All these adds that different things or actions make different people happy. You might be happy because you got a promotion, but someone else might be happy because he is just content with his normal life.  One person might be happier to earn more money, but another may be happier because of the respect they earn. 

7. External factors cause happiness

Some of you might think happiness comes from somewhere outside of yourself. In reality, it does not come from circumstances but from how we respond to them.  Usually, people do not have all the best things in life, but they make the best of what they already have.  It is a myth that your surroundings make you happier.  You have to find happiness from the inside rather than from others; happiness is indeed a state of mind. 

8. A simple life is not a happier life

Your thoughts may lead that a simple life is always dull. It is less than what life that your friend or relative has. You can’t stop comparing yourself to other social media influencers, business/startup founders, or successful people.

Just remember that you are on your journey. Debunk the myth that you are not successful because you are not going viral.

9. The problems in life impede happiness

You might also think that the problems in your life affect the journey of happiness.  But you can fully embrace your unique journey, which also includes unexpected twists and turns.  You have to understand the uncertainty and recognize the growth which experiences along the way in your life.

10. I will be happy if I retire

Another greatest myth is that you believe you will be truly happy when you retire. It’s because you don’t have to work anymore and there will be no stress.  This might be true in some cases, but you need a purpose in life to feel happy.  So if you want to have your best life, start being happy right now. 

How to debunk the myths of happiness?

  • Change your perspectives about the flawed assumptions about happiness. You will be happy even if you don’t achieve your dreams.
  • Stop and reflect on your lost promises to gain a new way of thinking.
  • Consider writing a journal that describes the facts of your experiences, thoughts, and feelings. Try to mention the process of what might have happened. Look for alternatives. 
  • Live at the moment and look for existing possibilities which lie ahead of you.
